Lakadong Turmeric Gets Global Push with Mission Golden Spice

Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has launched “Mission Golden Spice – Integrated Lakadong Turmeric Value Chain Enhancement Project”, a ₹175.45-crore initiative aimed at transforming Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric into a globally recognised premium spice.

The five-year mission seeks to strengthen the entire turmeric value chain, from cultivation and processing to branding, marketing and exports. The initiative is designed to enhance the incomes of farmers, expand turmeric cultivation and promote sustainable agricultural practices across Meghalaya.

Lakadong turmeric, known for its naturally high curcumin content and distinctive quality, has significant potential to emerge as a flagship “Brand North East” product in global markets. The mission will focus on improving productivity, strengthening post-harvest infrastructure, supporting value addition and encouraging modern processing and packaging.

The initiative also aims to create greater market opportunities for farmers and local communities while promoting women-led enterprises and strengthening the participation of farmer groups and cooperatives in the value chain.

The launch of Mission Golden Spice reflects the Government’s vision of building a self-reliant and economically vibrant North East by leveraging the region’s unique agricultural and natural resources. By positioning Lakadong turmeric as a premium global product, the mission is expected to boost Meghalaya’s agricultural economy and strengthen the state’s presence in international spice markets.

The initiative is also expected to contribute to the broader objective of promoting high-value, locally produced agricultural products from the North Eastern region under the “Brand North East” framework.
