DRDO Develops Multi-Role Vehicles for Future Battlefields

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday unveiled a new generation of Advanced Armoured Platforms in both tracked and wheeled variants, marking a significant step in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Designed to meet the evolving requirements of modern warfare, the platforms offer multi-role capabilities, including infantry combat, reconnaissance, and battlefield support. Equipped with a 30 mm crewless turret, anti-tank guided missile systems, and advanced situational awareness technologies, the vehicles are tailored for high-intensity combat environments.

Officials said the platforms feature high mobility and modular design, enabling seamless operations across diverse terrains such as high-altitude regions, deserts, and riverine zones. The wheeled variant ensures faster deployment on roads, while the tracked version is optimised for rough and challenging landscapes.

Developed by DRDO’s Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) in collaboration with leading Indian defence manufacturers, the platforms currently incorporate a substantial level of indigenous content, with plans to enhance localisation further.

The new armoured systems are expected to play a crucial role in replacing the Indian Army’s ageing BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles, with induction targeted after extensive user trials, likely by the end of the decade.

The unveiling underscores India’s broader commitment to strengthening defence preparedness under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, while positioning itself among nations developing next-generation armoured combat technologies.
