In a moment of pride for the nation, the Maratha Military Landscapes of India have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking India’s 44th World Heritage Site. The announcement was made during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Paris.
The inscription covers a serial nomination of 12 iconic forts that exemplify the Maratha Empire’s military genius, strategic planning, and architectural prowess from the 17th to 19th centuries. Spread across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, these forts reflect the adaptability of Maratha military architecture to diverse geographies—ranging from hilltops and coastal outposts to island and forested terrains.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Minister of Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat along with Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis lauded the historic milestone and congratulated the people of India for this achievement.
